Douglas Bunn, Master of Hickstead

It's been ten years since Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn passed away, shortly before the 2009 Hickstead Derby. Douglas had wanted to create a venue to rival those on the continent, and give British riders the chance to jump the sort of fences they encountered at foreign competitions, so he bought the house and land at Hickstead Place and turned it into the first purpose-built showground for equestrian sport in Great Britain. In 1960, the All England Jumping Course held its first competitions, growing quickly from humble beginnings to become one of the most famous sporting venues in the horse world. Next year Hickstead will celebrate its 60th anniversary, continuing Douglas's legacy.
